How to Turn Photos into a PDF on Your Phone (Documents, Certificates, Notes)
By Quick Work Studio · Published 29 October 2026 · How we check facts
Colleges, employers and government portals ask for documents as PDF: marksheets, certificates, an ID card, a signed form. You don't need a scanner. A phone camera does the job well, as long as the photos are taken properly and put together in the right order. Here's how to get a PDF that looks clean and passes upload limits.
Step 1: Take photos that look like scans
- Light: daylight from a window is best. Avoid the phone's flash, which leaves a bright spot, and avoid standing between the lamp and the page, which leaves your shadow on it.
- Surface: lay the page flat on a plain, darker surface, so its edges stand out. A white page on a white bedsheet is hard to crop.
- Angle: hold the phone straight above the page, not tilted. A tilted photo makes the page look like a trapezium.
- Fill the frame: the page should take up most of the photo, with a thin border around it.
- Sharpness: tap on the text to focus, hold still, and check the photo by zooming in before moving on.
Step 2: Crop and straighten
Cut away the table, your fingers and the background. Use the Image Cropper, or your gallery's edit button. A tight crop makes the page look scanned and also makes the file smaller.
Step 3: Combine the photos into one PDF
- Open Image to PDF and tap Choose images. You can pick several at once from your gallery.
- Put them in order with the ↑ and ↓ arrows. Page 1 of the document should be first.
- Choose the page size. A4 is the standard in India and works for nearly every form. "Same as image" makes each page exactly the size of the photo, which suits ID cards.
- Leave orientation on Automatic, so wide photos get a sideways page.
- Create the PDF and open it to check every page.
Your photos are turned into a PDF inside your browser and are not uploaded anywhere.
Step 4: Make it small enough to upload
Each page keeps a good-quality photo, so a PDF of several pages can be a few MB. If the form has a limit, run the PDF through Compress PDF. Medium is a good balance; Strong gives the smallest file. Our guide on compressing a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB explains what fits under each limit.
Your phone's built-in scanner
Both Android and iPhone can also scan straight to PDF, which is handy when you have the document in front of you:
- Android: in the Google Drive app, tap + and then Scan. It finds the page edges and straightens them for you.
- iPhone: in the Files or Notes app, choose Scan Documents.
Image to PDF is the better choice when the photos are already in your gallery, when they came from WhatsApp, or when you want to mix pages taken at different times.
Common documents and how to send them
| Document | Tip |
|---|---|
| Marksheets, several years | One PDF in order: 10th, 12th, then each semester. Name it clearly, like marksheets-all.pdf. |
| ID card, front and back | Two pages in one PDF, front first, page size "Same as image". |
| Signed form | Sign in blue or black ink, photograph every page, and keep pages in the original order. |
| Handwritten notes or assignment | Number the pages before you photograph them, so the order is easy to check. |
Keep your documents safe
- Share ID documents only with the official site or person who asked for them.
- For many purposes you can use a masked Aadhaar, which hides the first eight digits. You can download it from the UIDAI website.
- Delete document photos you no longer need from WhatsApp chats and shared folders.
- Avoid "free online converters" that upload your files to their servers when you don't know who runs them.
Checklist before you send
- All pages are there, the right way up and in order.
- Text is sharp when you zoom in, with no shadows or glare across it.
- The file is under the size limit.
- The file name tells the reader what it is.
Try it: Image to PDF combines your photos into one PDF on A4, Letter or image-sized pages. To join this PDF with others, use Merge PDF, and to turn a PDF back into pictures, use PDF to JPG.
