CGPA to Percentage: CBSE, VTU and University Formulas Explained
Quick Work Studio · 2026-10-27
Your marksheet says 8.4 CGPA, but the form asks for a percentage. There isn't one formula for everyone: it depends on who gave you the CGPA. Here are the common ones, and how to pick the right one.
CBSE: multiply by 9.5
For CBSE's 10-point CGPA, percentage = CGPA × 9.5. CBSE worked out the 9.5 by looking at several years of results: students in the top grade (A1, 91 to 100 marks) averaged about 95 marks, and A1 is worth 10 grade points, so each grade point is about 9.5 marks.
CBSE Class 10 marksheets showed CGPA for the years when the board used grades only (roughly 2010 to 2017). Since board exams returned, marksheets show marks, so you only need this formula for older Class 10 results.
Quick table (CBSE × 9.5)
| CGPA | Percentage | CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95% | 7.5 | 71.3% |
| 9.5 | 90.3% | 7.0 | 66.5% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | 6.5 | 61.8% |
| 8.5 | 80.8% | 6.0 | 57% |
| 8.0 | 76% | 5.0 | 47.5% |
Universities use their own formulas
| Formula | Where you see it | 8.0 CGPA gives |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA × 9.5 | CBSE, and many colleges by default | 76% |
| (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | VTU (Karnataka) engineering grade cards | 72.5% |
| (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | Some universities and autonomous colleges | 75% |
| CGPA × 10 | Some colleges, or when no formula is given | 80% |
The same 8.0 can be anywhere from 72.5% to 80%, so the formula matters. Many universities print the official conversion on the back of the grade card or in their regulations. That's the one to use.
Which one should you write on a form?
- If the form or job ad gives a formula, use it.
- Otherwise, use the formula printed on your grade card or published by your university.
- If there's none at all, write the CGPA and the scale ("8.4 / 10") and, if a percentage is required, CGPA × 9.5 or × 10, noting the formula you used.
Some universities issue an official equivalence certificate if an employer or a foreign university needs a percentage. Keep a copy, as it settles any doubt.
Going the other way: percentage to CGPA
Just reverse the formula. For CBSE, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, so 80% is about 8.4 CGPA. For VTU, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75.
CGPA, SGPA and GPA
- SGPA is your grade point average for one semester.
- CGPA is the average across all semesters so far, usually weighted by each subject's credits.
- GPA is used in the US on a 4-point scale; it can't be converted with the formulas above.
Try it: the CGPA to Percentage Calculator converts with the CBSE, VTU or other formulas, and the Percentage to CGPA Calculator goes the other way. To work out a semester average from your subjects, use the GPA Calculator.
