Add Line Numbers

Add 1, 2, 3… numbers to the start of every line in a block of text or code.

About the Add Line Numbers

Add Line Numbers puts numbers in front of every line of your text in the style you like, 1. 1) 1: [1], padded 01 or a tab, starting from any number and counting by any step. It can skip blank lines, and it can also remove existing numbers from a list.

What you can do with the Add Line Numbers

Where numbered lines help

Reviewing code snippets in a chat, discussing a poem or song lyrics line by line, giving precise feedback on a draft, or preparing a script or contract where people need to point to exact lines.

Styles and options

"1." and "1)" suit lists, "[1]" suits references, padded numbers like 001 keep columns tidy, and a tab is best for pasting into a spreadsheet. Start from any number, handy when continuing a list, and count by 2, 5 or 10 if you need gaps.

Taking numbers off

Copied a numbered list and need plain lines? Choose "Remove numbers" and the numbering at the start of each line is stripped, leaving the rest of the text untouched.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Change "Start at", and "Count by" if you want steps like 10, 20, 30.

Are empty lines numbered?

By default yes, so numbers match line positions. Switch on "Don't number blank lines" to skip them.

How do I remove line numbers?

Choose "Remove numbers" and paste your list.

How do I add line numbers to code or a poem for an assignment?

Paste your text into the box, keep "Add numbers" selected and pick a style such as 1. or [1]. The numbered version appears in the Result box right away, ready to copy or download as a .txt file.

What does the padded 01 style do?

It adds leading zeros so every number has the same width as the largest one, with a minimum of two digits. Nine lines become 01 to 09, while a 120-line text becomes 001 to 120, so the text after the numbers stays lined up.

Why is my numbered text not lined up after line 9?

With styles like 1. the numbers grow from one digit to two, so lines 10 onwards start one character further right than lines 1 to 9. Choose the 01 (padded) style and every number gets the same width, keeping the text in a neat column.

Can I number lines in steps of 10, like old BASIC programs?

Yes. Set "Start at" to 10 and "Count by" to 10, and the lines are numbered 10, 20, 30 and so on. Any start number and step work, so you can also count 5, 10, 15 or continue a list from 101.

How do I paste numbered lines into Excel or Google Sheets as two columns?

Pick the tab style, shown as 1 followed by a tab arrow. Each line then starts with its number and a tab character, and when you paste the result into a spreadsheet the numbers land in one column and your text in the next.

Will "Remove numbers" delete numbers in the middle of a sentence?

No, it only looks at the start of each line. It removes a number followed by . ) : or a tab, a number in square brackets like [3], or a number followed by a space, and leaves every other number in the line alone.

Why did "Remove numbers" delete a year at the start of my line?

A line beginning with a number and a space, such as "2026 was a good year", looks the same as a numbered line, so the leading 2026 is removed. Check lines that really start with a number or year before copying the result.

Can it remove lettered or Roman-numeral lists like a) or iv.?

No. "Remove numbers" only strips digits, such as 1., 2), 3:, [4] or 05, from the start of a line. Markers like a), b) or iv. are left in place, so remove those with a find and replace or by hand.
