Data Storage Converter

Convert bits, bytes, KB, MB, GB and TB.

About the Data Storage Converter

The Data Storage Converter switches between bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes, so you can see how file sizes and storage capacities compare.

What you can do with the Data Storage Converter

Bits and bytes

A bit is a single 0 or 1; a byte is 8 bits, enough to store one basic text character. File sizes and storage are normally measured in bytes, while network speeds are measured in bits, see the Data Speed Converter for those.

This converter uses 1,024

Here, 1 KB is 1,024 bytes, 1 MB is 1,024 KB and so on, the binary convention used by Windows and much software when showing file sizes. Strictly, these are called kibibytes, mebibytes and gibibytes (KiB, MiB, GiB), but most programs still label them KB, MB and GB.

Why a new drive looks smaller

Drive makers use decimal units, where 1 TB is exactly 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Your computer divides by 1,024 instead, so the same drive shows up as about 931 GB. Nothing is missing, it's the same number of bytes described two ways.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many MB are in a GB?

1,024 MB in this binary convention. In decimal units used on packaging, it's 1,000 MB.

Why does my 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?

The manufacturer counts 1 TB as 10¹² bytes, but your operating system divides by 1,024 three times, which gives about 931 GB.

How many bits are in a byte?

Eight.

Does this converter use 1000 or 1024?

It uses binary steps of 1,024, so 1 KB is 1,024 bytes and 1 GB is 1,024 MB. Drive makers and some websites use 1,000 instead. If a site gives a slightly different answer, it is most likely counting in thousands.

How many MB is 1.5 GB of daily mobile data?

Using 1,024 MB per GB, 1.5 GB is 1,536 MB, and 2 GB is 2,048 MB. Indian telecom plans often round these figures, so your operator app may show slightly different numbers. Type the GB value to see it in MB and KB.

How many bytes is a 200 KB upload limit?

In this tool 200 KB is 204,800 bytes. Many exam and government forms in India set photo or signature limits in KB. If a portal counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, stay a little under the limit to be safe.

How many MB are in a TB?

One TB is 1,024 GB, which is 1,048,576 MB in the binary units this tool uses. Type 1 with TB selected and the "In every unit" list shows the same capacity in GB, MB, KB, bytes and bits.

How many photos fit in 64 GB?

It depends on the photo size. 64 GB is 65,536 MB, so at about 4 MB per photo that is roughly 16,000 photos, minus space for the phone system and apps. Convert your free space to MB here and divide by a typical file size.

What are KiB, MiB and GiB?

They are the formal names for the binary units: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB and 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. This tool labels them KB, MB and GB, the way Windows does.

How many bits are in a gigabyte?

With 1,024-based units, 1 GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is 8,589,934,592 bits. Type 1 with GB selected and the bits value appears in the "In every unit" list. Very large values may show in scientific notation, such as 1.2346e+12.

Can I convert internet speed in Mbps here?

No. This tool converts storage sizes such as file sizes and drive capacities. Speeds like Mbps and MB/s are rates per second and use 1,000-based steps, so use the Data Speed Converter on this site for those.
