Fuel Cost Calculator

Cost of a trip by distance and efficiency.

About the Fuel Cost Calculator

The Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel a trip will use and what it will cost. Choose kilometres with km/l and rupees, or miles with mpg and dollars, set the distance, mileage and fuel price, pick one way or round trip, and split the cost between the people travelling. It also shows the monthly cost if it's your daily commute.

What you can do with the Fuel Cost Calculator

Pick your unit system

The units switch at the top keeps everything consistent: kilometres, km per litre and price per litre, or miles, miles per gallon and price per gallon. Mixing systems by hand is the usual cause of wrong fuel estimates.

Converting litres per 100 km

European cars often list fuel use in litres per 100 km, where lower is better. To turn it into km per litre, divide 100 by the figure: 6.5 L/100 km is about 15.4 km/l.

Official vs real-world mileage

Official mileage figures come from standardized lab tests, and real-world driving, traffic, air conditioning, speed and load, usually gives lower efficiency. Using a slightly lower figure than the official one gives a more realistic estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your vehicle's mileage to get the fuel needed, then multiply by the fuel price.

How do I split fuel costs with friends?

Set "Sharing the cost between" to the number of people and the "Each person" box shows everyone's share.

How can I find my car's real mileage?

Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then refill. Divide the distance driven by the litres you refilled.

Can I use this for an electric vehicle?

Roughly, yes: enter km per kWh as the mileage and the electricity price per kWh as the fuel price.

How do I calculate my monthly fuel cost for office commuting?

Enter your one-way distance, pick Round trip, and set your mileage and fuel price. The commute card multiplies that day's cost by 22 working days. A 20 km each-way ride on a bike giving 45 km/l, with petrol at ₹103, costs about ₹91.56 a day or ₹2,014 a month.

What is the fuel cost per km?

Divide the fuel price by your mileage. At ₹103 a litre and 15 km/l, each kilometre costs about ₹6.87 in fuel. The tool shows this as Cost per km. It covers fuel only, not tolls, parking, servicing or tyre wear.

How much does a ₹1 rise in petrol price really cost me?

For every 1,000 km at 15 km/l, you use about 66.67 litres, so each ₹1 increase adds about ₹66.67. Move the price slider up and down to see how your own trip or monthly commute changes with the fuel price.

Why is petrol cheaper in one state than another?

Fuel prices in India include state VAT, which differs from state to state, along with central excise duty and dealer commission. Prices can also change on any day. For an accurate estimate, enter the current price at the pump where you will fill up.

Can I use it for diesel or CNG?

Yes. For diesel, enter the diesel price per litre and your diesel mileage in km/l. For CNG, enter the price per kg and the mileage in km per kg; the maths is the same, though the fuel result will show the volume unit rather than kg.

Should I use the company mileage figure or my real one?

Use your real figure. The mileage quoted by makers comes from standard lab tests and real driving in city traffic, with the AC on or a full load usually gives less. Using a higher figure than you actually get will make the trip look cheaper than it is.

Can I use it for a trip in the US or UK?

Switch to "miles · mpg · quot; to enter distance in miles, mileage in miles per gallon and the price in dollars. US and UK gallons are different sizes, so make sure your mpg figure and fuel price use the same gallon.
