Password Generator

Generate strong random passwords with your choice of length and character types, a strength estimate, and an option to avoid look-alike characters.

About the Password Generator

The Password Generator creates strong, random passwords as soon as you open it. Choose the length with the slider or quick buttons, pick which character types to include, and see a colour-coded strength meter with an estimate of how long the password would take to crack. Digits and symbols are shown in their own colours so the password is easy to read and type.

What you can do with the Password Generator

Length beats complexity

Every extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords. Current US government guidance (NIST) emphasises long passwords over complicated rules. A random 16-character password with all character types has about 103 bits of randomness, far beyond what attackers can guess.

Reading the strength meter

The bits figure is length × log₂(size of the character set). Under 40 bits is weak (red), 40–60 fair (yellow), 60–80 strong and over 80 very strong (green). The crack-time line turns that into something concrete: how long a fast offline attack would take on average.

Look-alike characters and site rules

Switch on "Avoid look-alikes" if you'll need to type the password by hand or read it aloud: it removes 0, O, o, 1, l, I and |. The generator always includes at least one character from each type you leave on, so sites that demand "a number and a symbol" will accept it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this password generator safe?

Passwords are generated on your device using secure randomness and are never sent or stored anywhere. The recent list disappears when you leave the page.

How long should my password be?

At least 12–16 characters for important accounts. Longer is better, especially if you use a password manager.

Should I reuse a strong password?

No. Use a different password for every account, so one breach can't unlock the others. A password manager makes that practical.

What if a website doesn't allow special characters?

Switch off the !@#$ toggle and a new password is made from letters and numbers only. To keep it strong, make it a little longer, for example 20 characters instead of 16, and watch the strength meter.

What does Avoid look-alikes do?

It leaves out characters that are easy to confuse, such as 0 and O, or 1, l and I. This helps when you need to read a password off a screen and type it on another device, like a TV or a phone, at the cost of a slightly smaller character set.

Why is an 8-character password considered weak now?

Short passwords have far fewer combinations. At 10 billion guesses a second, every 8-letter lowercase password can be tried in about 21 seconds, and even an 8-character one using all four types falls in about 4 days. Longer passwords grow much harder to crack.

Is a longer password better than adding symbols?

Length usually adds more. Each extra character multiplies the number of combinations, so a 16-character lowercase password has about 75 bits of strength, close to a 12-character password using all four types at about 77. The best option combines both length and variety.

How do I remember a random password?

You don't need to memorise most of them. Save them in a password manager or your browser's built-in password saver, and memorise only one strong master password. Avoid writing passwords on paper near your computer or saving them in plain notes.

Can I get back a password I generated earlier?

Yes, while the page is open. The Recent passwords card keeps your last few passwords, and you can tap one to copy it. They are not saved anywhere, so they disappear when you leave or reload the page; copy the one you want before you go.

What password rules do Indian net banking sites usually have?

Many Indian banks ask for 8 or more characters with at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number and one special character, and some set a maximum length. With all four types switched on, every password here includes at least one of each.

How long a password can I make?

Use the slider to choose anything from 4 to 64 characters, or tap the quick buttons for 8, 12, 16, 20 or 32. For most accounts 16 characters with all types is plenty; use the longer options for a password manager's master password or Wi-Fi.
