Converters

Volume Converter

Convert liquid volumes across metric and US units.

About the Volume Converter

The Volume Converter covers litres, millilitres and cubic metres, US kitchen measures (gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, tablespoons and teaspoons) and the UK gallon.

What you can do with the Volume Converter

US and UK gallons are different

A US gallon is 3.785 litres, while an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres, about 20% bigger. That difference matters for fuel economy figures: a car's miles per gallon looks higher in UK figures than in US figures for exactly the same efficiency.

Cups and spoons vary by country

The cup, fluid ounce, tablespoon and teaspoon in this tool are US customary measures: a US cup is about 237 ml and a tablespoon about 14.8 ml. Recipes from Australia, New Zealand and Canada often use a 250 ml metric cup, and an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml. If a recipe's results seem off, check where it was written.

Litres and cubic measures

One litre is exactly 1,000 cubic centimetres, and a cubic metre holds 1,000 litres. That's handy for estimating water tanks: a tank 1 m long, 1 m wide and 1 m deep holds 1,000 litres.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many millilitres are in a cup?

About 236.6 ml in a US cup. A metric cup, used in some countries' recipes, is 250 ml.

How many litres are in a gallon?

3.785 litres in a US gallon and 4.546 litres in a UK gallon.

Can I convert grams of flour to cups here?

No, grams measure weight and cups measure volume, and the conversion depends on the ingredient's density. A cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of sugar.

How many ml are in a tablespoon?

A US tablespoon, the one used in this tool, is about 14.79 ml, and a US teaspoon is about 4.93 ml. Three teaspoons make one tablespoon. Many Indian and metric recipes round these to 15 ml and 5 ml, which is close enough for cooking.

How many litres is 1 cubic metre?

One cubic metre is exactly 1,000 litres. So a 1,000-litre overhead water tank holds 1 m³, and a water bill that charges per kilolitre is charging per cubic metre. Pick m³ and litre to convert tank or tanker sizes.

Why are US and UK gallons different?

They were defined differently. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 litres, so the UK gallon is about 20% bigger. Choose the right one from the list, especially when comparing car mileage figures from the US and UK.

How many fluid ounces are in a litre?

One litre is about 33.81 US fluid ounces, and one US fl oz is about 29.57 ml. Bottles labelled 16.9 fl oz hold about 500 ml. The fluid ounces in this tool are US fluid ounces, which are slightly larger than UK ones.

How many cups are in a litre?

A litre is about 4.23 US cups, since one US cup is about 236.6 ml. If your recipe uses a 250 ml metric cup instead, a litre is exactly 4 cups. This tool uses the US cup, so convert metric cups as 250 ml each.

Is 1 litre of water equal to 1 kg?

Very nearly. Pure water at about 4 °C has a density of close to 1 kg per litre, so 1 litre weighs about 1 kg. Milk, oil and other liquids have different densities. This tool converts volume only, so use a weight converter for kilograms.

Can I convert cubic feet with this tool?

Cubic feet are not in the unit list. One cubic foot is about 28.32 litres, so multiply cubic feet by 28.32 and type the litres here to see m³, gallons or other units. Cubic feet are often used for fridge and room volumes.

How do I see one value in all volume units at once?

Type the value in the top box and look at the "In every unit" list below. It shows the same amount in litres, ml, m³, both gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fl oz, tbsp and tsp. Tap any of them to make it the second unit.
