Typing Speed Test

Test your typing speed in words per minute and your accuracy with random practice passages, the timer starts with your first keystroke.

About the Typing Speed Test

The Typing Speed Test measures how fast and how accurately you type. Type one passage or race the clock for 30 or 60 seconds, watch every letter turn white or red as you go, and see your words per minute, accuracy and errors live. At the end you get a rating, and your personal best is remembered on this device.

What you can do with the Typing Speed Test

How WPM is calculated

Typing tests use a standard "word" of five characters, so results are comparable no matter which words appear. Only correctly typed characters count towards your speed, which means rushing and making mistakes lowers your score rather than raising it. Pasting is blocked, so every score is real.

What's a good speed?

An average adult types around 40 words per minute. Around 60–75 WPM is considered fast and professional, and very fast typists exceed 100. Accuracy above about 95% matters more than raw speed, fixing errors costs more time than typing slightly slower.

How to get faster

Learn touch typing, keeping your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and not looking at the keyboard. Practise a few minutes every day with the 60-second test, focusing on accuracy first; speed follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a mistake stop the test?

No. Keep typing, mistakes are shown in red and simply lower your accuracy and WPM.

Can I do a timed test?

Yes. Choose "30 seconds" or "60 seconds"; the clock starts with your first key and the test ends when it reaches zero.

Can I take the test on my phone?

Yes, though phone typing speeds are usually lower than keyboard speeds, so compare results on the same device.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is a common average for regular computer users, and 60 WPM or more counts as fast. This test rates you as Beginner below 25 WPM, Getting there from 25, Average from 40, Fast from 60 and Pro from 80.

How is WPM calculated?

WPM counts only correctly typed characters, divides them by 5 (the standard word length) and then by the minutes taken. For example, 250 correct characters in 60 seconds is 50 WPM. Wrong characters add nothing to your speed.

What typing speed is needed for SSC exams?

For SSC CHSL, the skill test usually asks for 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi on a computer. Rules differ by exam and year, so check the official notification. This test uses English passages.

Does fixing a mistake with Backspace help my score?

Yes. The test compares what is in the box with the passage, so if you correct a wrong letter before finishing, it no longer counts as an error and your accuracy goes back up. Uncorrected mistakes count against you.

What is the difference between New text and Restart?

Restart clears what you typed and starts again with the same passage, which is useful for practising one text. New text loads a different passage. Both reset the timer, and it starts again with your first key.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Learn touch typing with your fingers resting on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;), look at the screen instead of the keys, and focus on accuracy first. Short daily practice of 10 to 15 minutes usually helps more than long, rare sessions.

Why didn't my best score update?

A new best is only counted when your accuracy is 80% or higher, so rushing with lots of mistakes doesn't count. Each mode (passage, 30 s, 60 s and 2 min) has its own best, shown under Your progress.

Where are my results saved?

Your last 50 results are saved in this browser on this device, never online. The Your progress card shows your best for each mode, a chart of your recent tests and whether you are getting faster. Clear history removes them.

What does "Keys you missed most" show?

After each test, the keys you mistyped most often are shown with how many times, for example e 3×. Practising those slowly is the quickest way to raise both accuracy and speed.

Which mode should I use?

One passage is good for a quick check. 60 seconds is the standard for comparing scores, and 2 minutes is closer to a real typing exam, where staying steady matters more than a fast start.
