Electricity Bill Calculator

Estimate what an appliance costs to run, from its wattage, hours of use and your electricity rate per unit.

About the Electricity Bill Calculator

The Electricity Bill Calculator estimates what an appliance costs to run. Tap an appliance such as an AC, geyser, fan or fridge to fill in typical watts and hours, adjust the sliders, and see the cost per hour, day, month and year. Add several appliances to "My home list" to see your whole home's estimate and which appliance costs the most.

What you can do with the Electricity Bill Calculator

What a "unit" really is

Your electricity bill charges per unit, and one unit is one kilowatt-hour: a 1,000-watt device running for one hour. A 1,500-watt heater for 4 hours uses 6 units a day; at ₹8 a unit that is ₹48 a day, or about ₹1,440 a month.

Finding an appliance's wattage

The appliance buttons use typical values, but your model may differ. Look on the rating label or plug, it usually lists watts (W) or amps and volts (watts = volts × amps). Heating appliances (geysers, irons, heaters, ACs) draw the most; LED lights and phone chargers draw very little.

Watch the slab rates

Many electricity boards charge higher rates as your monthly usage rises, and add fixed charges and taxes. This calculator uses one flat rate, so treat the result as a close estimate of the energy portion, not the exact bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find my cost per unit?

It is on your electricity bill, often shown per kWh or per unit. If you have slab rates, use the rate for your usage band.

How do I estimate my whole home's bill?

Set up each appliance and tap "+ Add to my home list". The list adds up the units and cost of everything and ranks the appliances by cost.

Does standby power count?

Many devices draw a few watts even when off or on standby. Over a month this adds up, though it is small compared with heating appliances.

How many units does a 1.5 ton AC use?

At its full rated power of about 1,500 W, a 1.5 ton AC uses 1.5 units an hour, so 8 hours a day is 12 units, or ₹96 at ₹8 a unit. Inverter and higher star-rated models usually use less once the room is cool.

How much does a ceiling fan cost to run per month?

A 75 W fan running 12 hours a day for 30 days uses 27 units, which is ₹216 at ₹8 a unit. Energy-saving BLDC fans draw much less power, so lower the Power slider to the wattage on your fan's label.

How do I find my appliance's wattage?

Check the rating sticker or plate on the appliance, or its manual, for a figure in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). For ACs and fridges, the BEE star label also shows yearly energy use in units, which helps you check this estimate.

Why is my actual bill higher than this estimate?

Most Indian electricity boards use slab tariffs, where the rate per unit rises as you use more, and add fixed charges, electricity duty and sometimes fuel adjustment charges. This calculator uses one flat rate, so treat its result as the energy part of the bill.

Why does the fridge use only 10 hours a day?

A fridge is on all day, but its compressor switches on and off to hold the temperature, so it runs for only part of the time. The preset assumes 150 W for 10 hours, about 45 units a month. Adjust it to match your model.

How much can I save by switching to LED bulbs?

A 9 W LED used 6 hours a day for 30 days uses 1.62 units, about ₹13 at ₹8 a unit. A 60 W old-style bulb used the same way uses 10.8 units, about ₹86, so the LED uses 85% less power.

How much electricity does a geyser use?

A 2,000 W geyser running 1 hour a day uses 2 units a day, or 60 units a month, which is ₹480 at ₹8 a unit. The thermostat switches off once the water is hot, so real use is often a bit lower.

How long can an appliance run on one unit?

Divide 1,000 by the wattage to get hours per unit. A 9 W LED bulb runs about 111 hours on one unit, a 75 W fan about 13 hours, and a 1,500 W AC at full power only about 40 minutes.
