Morse Code Translator
Translate text to International Morse code and decode dots and dashes back into letters.
About the Morse Code Translator
This translator converts text to International Morse code and Morse back to text, type in either box and the other one follows. You can also hear the code as beeps with a flashing light, at any speed from 5 to 30 words per minute.
What you can do with the Morse Code Translator
- Two-way translation: Type text or Morse in either box and the other follows.
- Hear it: Play the code as beeps with a flashing light.
- Your speed: Anywhere from 5 to 30 words per minute.
- Standard code: Uses International Morse, letters, numbers and punctuation.
How to read the output
A dot is a short signal and a dash is a long one. Letters are separated by a single space and words by a slash ( / ). When Morse is sent as sound or light, the timing matters: a dash lasts three times as long as a dot, the gap between letters equals three dots, and the gap between words equals seven.
Learning by ear
Experienced operators recognise letters by their rhythm rather than counting dots and dashes. Start playback slowly, around 10 words per minute, and raise the speed as the patterns become familiar.
The story of SOS
SOS (· · · – – – · · ·) became the international distress signal in the early 1900s. It was chosen because the pattern is easy to send and hard to mistake, not because the letters stand for words.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I type Morse code to decode it?
Use a full stop for a dot and a hyphen for a dash, put one space between letters and a slash between words, for example: .... .. / - .... . .-. .
Can I hear the Morse code?
Yes. Tap ▶ Play sound. Use the Speed slider to make it slower or faster, and tap ■ Stop at any time.
Why are some characters missing from my translation?
Only letters A–Z and digits 0–9 are in this translator's Morse table, so punctuation and symbols are skipped.
What is SOS in Morse code?
SOS is ... --- ..., three dots, three dashes, three dots. In a real distress call it is sent as one continuous signal without the usual gaps between letters. Type SOS in the Text box to see the code and tap Play sound to hear it.
How is Morse code speed measured in words per minute?
Speed is based on the standard word PARIS, which takes 50 dot-units including gaps. One dot lasts 1200 divided by the WPM in milliseconds, so at the default 15 WPM a dot is 80 ms and a dash 240 ms. The slider goes from 5 to 30 WPM.
Is Morse code case-sensitive?
No. Morse has one code per letter, so A and a are both .- and the decoder writes letters back in capitals. That means "Hello" and "HELLO" give the same code, and decoding .... .. returns HI.
What are the numbers 0 to 9 in Morse code?
Every digit uses five symbols. 1 is .----, 2 is ..---, 3 is ...--, 4 is ....-, 5 is ....., 6 is -...., 7 is --..., 8 is ---.., 9 is ----. and 0 is -----. The pattern makes them easy to learn once you know a few.
Why does my Morse decode as one wrong letter?
Letters must be separated by spaces and words by a slash. If you type .-.-.- with no spaces, it is read as a single symbol (a full stop) instead of A A A. Put a space between each letter's dots and dashes, and / between words.
Can I paste Morse that uses · or, instead of . and -?
Yes. Middle dots and bullets are read as dots, and en dashes, em dashes, underscores and minus signs are read as dashes. That means code copied from websites or documents usually decodes correctly without cleaning it up first.
Why is E a single dot and T a single dash?
Morse code gave the shortest codes to the letters used most often in English. E is the most common letter, so it is a single dot, and T is a single dash. Rarer letters like Q (--.-) and J (.---) get longer codes.
What tone does the Play sound button use?
It plays a 650 Hz beep, a pitch close to what radio operators commonly use for Morse. Dashes last three times as long as dots, and the light flashes with each beep so you can follow the code visually as well.
