URL Encoder & Decoder

Percent-encode text so it is safe inside a URL or query string, or decode %20-style URLs back to readable text.

About the URL Encoder & Decoder

URLs may only contain a limited set of characters, so spaces, ampersands and non-English letters are "percent-encoded" as % followed by a hex code. This tool encodes and decodes as you type, lets you encode a single value or a whole URL, and breaks any link you paste into its protocol, host, path and query parameters.

What you can do with the URL Encoder & Decoder

What gets encoded

Letters, digits and the symbols - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ) are left alone. Everything else is converted: a space becomes %20, & becomes %26, = becomes %3D, / becomes %2F and ? becomes %3F. Non-English characters are converted to their UTF-8 bytes, so é becomes %C3%A9.

Encoding a value or a whole URL

Use "Everything" for a piece you're inserting into a link, a search term or a query-string value. Use "Keep URL structure" for a complete address with spaces or Hindi text in it; it encodes those but keeps "https://", slashes and ? & = intact so the link still works.

Reading a long link

Tracking links can be hard to read. Paste one in and the URL breakdown shows each query parameter with its decoded value, so you can see exactly what the link carries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does decoding show an error?

The text contains a % that isn't followed by two valid hex digits, or an incomplete multi-byte sequence. A stray "%" such as "100%" in an otherwise encoded string is the most common cause.

%20 or +?

Web forms often send spaces as "+" in query strings, so the decoder turns "+" into a space. A real plus sign inside an encoded value should be written as %2B.

Is URL encoding the same as HTML encoding?

No. URL encoding makes text safe inside a web address; HTML encoding makes text display correctly inside a web page. Use the HTML Entity Encoder & Decoder for the second job.

What is URL encoding?

URL encoding, also called percent-encoding, replaces characters that are not allowed or have special meaning in a web address with % and two hex digits. A space becomes %20, & becomes %26 and % itself becomes %25, so "50% off" turns into 50%25%20off.

Should I choose "Everything" or "Keep URL structure"?

Use Everything when encoding one value that goes inside a link, such as a search term, because it also encodes & = ? / and #. Use Keep URL structure for a full address with spaces in it; https://x.com/a b?q=1&r=2 becomes https://x.com/a%20b?q=1&r=2.

How are Hindi words written in a URL?

Each character is turned into its UTF-8 bytes, and each byte becomes a % code. Most Devanagari characters take 3 bytes, so नमस्ते becomes a 54-character string starting %E0%A4%A8%E0%A4%AE. Browsers often display the Hindi but send the encoded form.

What are the most common URL codes?

Space is %20, & is %26, = is %3D, ? is %3F, / is %2F, # is %23, + is %2B and % is %25. The rupee sign ₹ takes three bytes, so it becomes %E2%82%B9.

Why did my link break when a value had an & in it?

In a query string, & separates one parameter from the next, so a value like "a&b" gets cut off at the &. Encode just the value in Everything mode first, giving a%26b, and then put it in the link.

What does %2520 in a URL mean?

It means the text was encoded twice. The first pass turned a space into %20, and the second turned the % into %25, giving %2520. Decode it once to get %20, and again to get the space, then make sure your code encodes only once.

How do I see the UTM or query parameters in a long link?

Paste the full link that starts with http or https. The URL breakdown lists the protocol, host, path and fragment, and a table shows every query parameter, such as utm_source or utm_campaign, with its decoded value.

Which characters are never encoded?

In Everything mode, the letters A to Z and a to z, digits 0 to 9 and the symbols - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ) are left as they are. Every other character, including spaces and non-English letters, is turned into % codes.
