Time Converter

Convert durations from seconds to years.

About the Time Converter

The Time Converter turns a duration from one unit into another, seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years.

What you can do with the Time Converter

Fixed units and average units

Seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks always have the same length, so those conversions are exact. Months and years don't: months have 28 to 31 days and leap years have 366 days. This tool uses averages, a year of 365.25 days and a month of one-twelfth of that, about 30.44 days, which is the standard approach for long durations.

Handy numbers to remember

An hour has 3,600 seconds, a day has 86,400 seconds and a week has 604,800 seconds. A year is about 8,766 hours, and a million seconds is only about 11.6 days, while a billion seconds is nearly 32 years.

When to use a different tool

To count the exact number of days between two calendar dates, use the Date Difference Calculator, which handles real month lengths and leap years. To turn a large number of seconds into hours, minutes and seconds, use the Duration Formatter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many seconds are in a day?

86,400 seconds (24 × 60 × 60).

Why isn't my month conversion a whole number of days?

Because months vary in length, the tool uses the average month of about 30.44 days.

How many weeks are in a year?

About 52.18 weeks, 52 weeks plus one extra day, or two in a leap year.

How many hours are in a year?

This tool uses an average year of 365.25 days, which is 8,766 hours or 525,960 minutes. A normal 365-day year has 8,760 hours, and a leap year has 8,784. The quarter day averages leap years in over a four-year cycle.

How many days is a month in this converter?

A month is taken as an average of 30.4375 days, which is one twelfth of a 365.25-day year, or 730.5 hours. Real months run from 28 to 31 days, so use days rather than months when you need an exact calendar answer.

How many days is one million seconds?

One million seconds is about 11.57 days, while one billion seconds is about 31.69 years. Type 1000000 with seconds selected and the "In every unit" list shows the same span in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years.

How do I convert 1.5 hours to minutes?

Multiply hours by 60: 1.5 hours is 90 minutes and 2.25 hours is 135 minutes, or 2 hours 15 minutes. The tool gives answers as decimals, so 0.75 hours shows as 45 minutes when you pick minutes as the second unit.

Can this calculate the days between two dates?

No. The Time Converter changes a length of time from one unit to another, such as 90 days into weeks. It does not take calendar dates, so count the days between two dates first and then convert that number of days here.

How many days are 1,000 hours?

One thousand hours is about 41.67 days, or just under six weeks. Type 1000 with hours selected and pick days, or read days, weeks and months straight from the "In every unit" list without changing the second unit.

Why do decimal hours like 2.5 look wrong on a timesheet?

Decimal hours count fractions of an hour, so 2.5 hours means 2 hours 30 minutes, not 2 hours 50 minutes. Mixing the two formats is a common payroll mistake. Convert the decimal part to minutes by multiplying it by 60.

Can I use negative or decimal values?

Yes. Both boxes accept decimals such as 0.5 or 2.75, and a minus sign is allowed too, which can be handy for time differences. Type in either box and the other converts as you type. Use a dot for decimals, not a comma.
