Duration Formatter

Seconds → H:M:S.

About the Duration Formatter

The Duration Formatter turns a number of seconds into hours, minutes and seconds that are easy to read, and back again. It also gives the clock format, decimal minutes, hours and days, and the ISO 8601 code, and can add up a whole list of durations such as song lengths or work sessions.

What you can do with the Duration Formatter

Three modes

"Seconds → time" turns 9,045 seconds into 2h 30m 45s. "Time → seconds" goes the other way from days, hours, minutes and seconds. "Add up durations" totals a list, one duration per line, in whatever format you have.

Where it's useful

Log files, fitness apps, video editors and programming tools often report time as a plain number of seconds. This makes those numbers readable, and the add-up mode totals playlist lengths, workout splits or hours worked.

ISO 8601 durations

APIs, YouTube data and calendar files often write durations like PT2H30M45S: P for period, T for time, then hours, minutes and seconds. The converter writes that form for you to paste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours is 10,000 seconds?

2 hours, 46 minutes and 40 seconds, or about 2.78 hours.

How do I add up song lengths?

Choose "Add up durations" and paste one length per line, like 3:45. The total appears instantly.

Does it show days?

Yes. Durations over 24 hours are shown with days, like 1d 2h 0m 0s, and the clock format keeps counting hours.

How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?

Multiply the decimal part by 60: 2.75 hours is 2 hours plus 0.75 x 60 = 45 minutes. In Add up durations, typing 2.75h on a line gives 2h 45m 0s, or 9,900 seconds.

Why does 1:30 show as 1 minute 30 seconds?

A clock time with two parts is read as minutes and seconds, like a song length. For 1 hour 30 minutes, type 1:30:00 or 1h 30m. This is a common mistake when adding up work hours.

What does PT2H30M45S mean?

It is the ISO 8601 duration format: P starts the period, T starts the time part, then H, M and S mark hours, minutes and seconds. So PT2H30M45S is 2 hours 30 minutes 45 seconds. It is used in YouTube's API, schema.org video data and many apps.

How many seconds are in a day, a week and a year?

A day has 86,400 seconds, a week has 604,800 and a 365-day year has 31,536,000. Type any of these into Seconds to time to see them broken down, or use Time to seconds to work the other way.

How do I convert work hours to decimal for a timesheet?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. Enter the time in Time to seconds, or add up several sessions in Add up durations, and copy the Total hours value.

Why is part of my line ignored or not understood?

Each number needs a unit or a clock format. Write 1h 30m rather than 1h 30, and 3:45 rather than 3.45. Lines with no recognisable time are counted as not understood and left out of the total.

Can I enter more than 59 minutes in Time to seconds?

Yes. You can type 90 minutes or 150 seconds and the total is worked out correctly, then shown as 1h 30m or 2m 30s. This is handy when a time is given only in minutes.

Why does the clock format show more than 24 hours?

The hh:mm:ss row counts total hours, so 30 hours shows as 30:00:00 rather than rolling over to a new day. The main result and the breakdown line split it into days, such as 1d 6h 0m 0s.
