Text to URL Slug

Turn a title into a clean, lowercase, hyphenated URL slug that search engines read well.

About the Text to URL Slug

Text to URL Slug turns a title into the short, readable part of a web address. Choose a hyphen, underscore or dot, remove small words or numbers, set a maximum length, and preview the full URL with your own website, or convert a whole list of titles at once.

What you can do with the Text to URL Slug

What the converter does

It lowercases the text, removes accents, turns "&" into "and", replaces spaces and punctuation with your separator, and trims extra separators from the start and end. The result works in any browser without special encoding.

Why hyphens?

Google recommends hyphens rather than underscores to separate words in URLs, because hyphens are read as word separators. Short, lowercase, descriptive slugs, ideally under about 60 characters, are easier to read, share and remember.

Non-Latin scripts

Slugs here contain only the letters a–z and numbers, so a title written entirely in Hindi or Tamil gives no slug and the tool tells you so. Write a transliterated version of the title in English letters first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I remove words like "the" and "a" from slugs?

It's optional. "Remove small words" does it for you; keep enough words that the slug still describes the page.

Can I make slugs for many titles at once?

Yes. Choose "Many" and paste one title per line.

Can I change a slug after a page is published?

You can, but add a redirect from the old address so existing links and search rankings aren't lost.

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the readable last part of a web address that identifies one page. In example.com/blog/gst-rates-2026, the slug is gst-rates-2026. A good slug is short, lowercase and describes the page, which helps both readers and search engines.

Should I use hyphens or underscores in a URL slug?

Use hyphens. Google recommends hyphens because it reads them as spaces between words, while underscores can make words run together. Hyphen is the default separator here; underscore and dot are there for systems that need them, such as file names.

How long should a URL slug be?

There is no fixed rule, but three to six keywords, roughly under 60 characters, is a sensible target. Use the "Maximum length" slider (up to 120 characters) to cap it; the slug is cut at a word boundary so you don't end up with half a word.

Why did my Hindi or Tamil title give an empty slug?

The slug keeps only the English letters a to z and digits 0 to 9, so characters in Devanagari, Tamil and other Indian scripts are dropped. Write or transliterate the title in English letters first, for example "diwali-rangoli-designs".

What happens to accents, apostrophes and the & sign?

Accented letters are turned into plain ones (café becomes cafe), apostrophes are removed so "don't" becomes dont instead of don-t, and & is written as the word "and". Any other symbol or space becomes your chosen separator.

Should I put the year in my blog post slug?

Usually not for posts you plan to update, because a slug like best-phones-2026 looks outdated next year and changing it later means setting up a redirect. Switch on "Remove numbers" to drop standalone numbers such as 2026 or 10 from the slug.

Why are slugs written in lowercase?

On many web servers the path part of a URL is case-sensitive, so /Blog/My-Post and /blog/my-post can be treated as different pages. Keeping slugs all lowercase avoids broken links and duplicate pages, which is why this tool always lowercases the text.

How do I see what the full page address will look like?

Type your site's address and folder, such as https://www.yoursite.in/blog/, into the "Preview with your website" box. The tool shows that address followed by your slug, so you can check the complete link before copying the slug.
