Unix Timestamp Converter

Unix time ⇄ human-readable date.

About the Unix Timestamp Converter

A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds since midnight UTC on 1 January 1970. This converter shows the current Unix time live, turns any timestamp, in seconds or milliseconds, detected automatically, into your local time, Indian time, UTC, ISO 8601 and "how long ago", and turns a date and time back into a timestamp. Tap any value to copy it.

What you can do with the Unix Timestamp Converter

Seconds or milliseconds?

Most systems store Unix time in seconds, which today is a 10-digit number. JavaScript and many databases use milliseconds, giving a 13-digit number. The converter tells which you pasted and says so under the box, so you don't get a date in 1970 or the year 50,000.

Time zones

A Unix timestamp always refers to the same instant everywhere in the world. The converter shows it in your device's time zone, in IST and in UTC side by side, so you can check what time it was for someone elsewhere.

The year 2038 problem

Older systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit number can only count up to 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. After that the number overflows. Most modern systems use 64-bit time, which pushes the limit billions of years into the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Unix time 0?

00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, the Unix epoch.

Why is my date showing as 1970 or a strange year?

A seconds value was probably read as milliseconds or the other way round. This tool detects it from the number of digits: 13 or more means milliseconds.

How do I get the current timestamp?

It's shown live at the top. Tap "Copy seconds", or "Use now" to fill in both boxes.

How do I convert a Unix timestamp to IST?

India Standard Time is UTC plus 5 hours 30 minutes, so add 19,800 seconds to the UTC time. Paste the timestamp and read the India (IST) row: for example, 1735689600 is 00:00 UTC on 1 January 2025, which is 05:30 IST.

How do I convert a Unix timestamp in Excel or Google Sheets?

With the timestamp in A1, use =A1/86400+DATE(1970,1,1) and format the cell as date and time. That gives UTC; add +TIME(5,30,0) for IST. For a 13-digit milliseconds value, divide by 86400000 instead.

What is the Year 2038 problem?

Older systems store Unix time as a signed 32-bit number, which tops out at 2147483647. That is 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038 (08:44:07 IST), after which those systems overflow. Modern 64-bit systems are not affected.

Does Unix time count leap seconds?

No. Unix time treats every day as exactly 86,400 seconds and ignores leap seconds, so it is not a perfect count of elapsed seconds. For everyday date conversion the difference does not matter.

Is a Unix timestamp the same in every time zone?

Yes. A timestamp marks one instant worldwide, counted from UTC, so the same number is 05:30 in Mumbai and 00:00 in London. Only the way it is displayed changes, which is why the tool shows your time, IST and UTC side by side.

What does the Z at the end of ISO 8601 mean?

Z means the time is in UTC (sometimes called Zulu time). The ISO 8601 row shows a value like 2025-01-01T00:00:00.000Z, with date, time and milliseconds. In IST the same moment is 2025-01-01T05:30:00+05:30.

Which time zone does the date picker use?

The date and time you pick are read in your device's time zone. If your phone or computer is set to India, midnight on 1 January 2025 gives 1735669800, which is 19,800 seconds less than midnight UTC (1735689600).

Can a Unix timestamp be negative?

Yes. Negative timestamps are dates before 1 January 1970, so -86400 is 00:00 UTC on 31 December 1969. Type the minus sign in the timestamp box and it is converted like any other value.
