Convert land and surface area units.

About the Area Converter

The Area Converter works with square metres, square kilometres, square feet, square yards, square miles, acres and hectares, plus the cent and the guntha, two land units widely used in India.

What you can do with the Area Converter

Why area conversions surprise people

Area units scale with the square of the length conversion. A metre is about 3.28 feet, but a square metre is about 10.76 square feet, not 3.28. That's why doubling the length and width of a room makes its floor area four times bigger.

Hectares and acres

A hectare is 10,000 square metres, a square 100 m on each side, noticeably larger than a standard football pitch. An acre is about 4,047 square metres, or roughly 0.405 hectares, so one hectare is almost 2.5 acres.

Cents and gunthas for land in India

A cent is one-hundredth of an acre, which is 435.6 sq ft or about 40.5 square metres; it's common in land listings in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. A guntha (also written gunta) is 121 square yards, 1,089 sq ft or about 101.2 square metres, and 40 gunthas make an acre. Other local units such as the bigha vary from state to state, so they aren't included.
