Tip Calculator

Split a bill with tip, per person.

About the Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator works out the tip on a bill, the total including the tip, and how much each person pays when you're splitting it. Choose rupees, dollars, euros or pounds, tap a tip percentage, set the number of people with the − and + buttons, and optionally round each share up.

What you can do with the Tip Calculator

Tipping customs differ by country

In the United States, 15–20% is usual at sit-down restaurants and tips make up a big part of staff pay. In India, leaving around 5–10% is common but optional, and a service charge added to the bill is voluntary under consumer-protection guidelines issued in 2022, you can ask for it to be removed. Many European restaurants include service in the price, and in Japan tipping isn't customary at all.

Tip before or after tax?

Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the more common practice, since tax isn't part of the service. Enter the pre-tax total if you want to follow that approach.

A quick mental method

For a 10% tip, move the decimal point one place to the left. Double it for 20%, or add half again for 15%. On a bill of ₹640, that's ₹64 for 10%, ₹96 for 15% and ₹128 for 20%, the comparison table under the receipt shows the same thing for your bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip?

It depends on where you are and the service. Use the local custom as a guide; tap a percentage or set any value with the slider.

Can I split the bill unevenly?

This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, work out each person's share of the bill first and add the tip percentage to each.

Is a restaurant service charge in India mandatory?

Under 2022 consumer-protection guidelines it's voluntary, and customers can ask for it to be removed from the bill.

How do I calculate a 10% tip?

Move the decimal point one place to the left. On a 1,850 bill, 10% is 185, so the total is 2,035. In the tool, enter the bill amount, tap the 10% chip, and the receipt shows the tip and the total together.

Should I tip on the amount before or after GST?

Etiquette varies, but many people tip on the food amount before tax. To do that, enter the pre-GST subtotal from the bill as the bill amount. The tool applies the tip percentage only to the number you type in.

How does rounding each share up change the tip?

Each share is rounded up to the next whole amount, and the extra goes into the tip. A 1,000 bill with 10% tip split 3 ways is 366.67 each; rounded up it is 367 each, 1,101 in total, which works out to a 10.1% tip.

Can I set a tip percentage that is not on the chips?

Yes. Use the "Or set any tip" slider or its box to choose any whole percentage from 0% to 50%. The chips cover the common choices of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%.

What does the comparison table show?

It shows the tip amount, the total and the share per person for 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of your bill, all at once, using the number of people you set. It helps you pick a tip that fits a round figure or a budget.

How many people can I split the bill between?

Use the minus and plus buttons to choose from 1 to 50 people. The bill plus tip is divided evenly, and the receipt adds a per-person line. For uneven splits or a service charge with shares rounded up to the nearest 10, the site's Bill Splitter has those options.

How much do people usually tip in other countries?

Customs differ: in the US 15% to 20% at sit-down restaurants is common, in the UK around 10% to 12.5% if service is not already added, and in much of Europe rounding up is usual. Choose the currency and percentage that match where you are.

Can I calculate the tip on a hotel or taxi bill too?

Yes. The calculation is the same for any bill: enter the amount, choose a percentage and set the number of people. Delivery riders, drivers and hotel staff are often tipped a fixed amount instead, which you can simply add yourself.
