Hours Calculator

Work out how much time passed between a start and end time, in hours and minutes, including shifts that run past midnight.

About the Hours Calculator

The Hours Calculator works out how long you worked between a start and end time, minus breaks, including shifts that run past midnight. Add as many shifts as you need for a timesheet, see the total in hours and minutes and in decimal, and work out pay with optional overtime.

What you can do with the Hours Calculator

Shifts past midnight

A shift from 10 PM to 6 AM ends "earlier" than it starts on the clock. The calculator spots that and counts it as an overnight shift of 8 hours, so night workers don't have to do the maths.

Hours and minutes vs decimal

Timesheets and payroll often need decimal hours: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, and 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25. The total shows both, so you can copy whichever your form asks for.

Working out pay

Set your hourly rate to see what you earned. If you're paid more after a certain number of hours in a shift, set the overtime limit and those extra hours are paid at time-and-a-half.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours worked overnight?

Just enter the start and end times, a shift that ends after midnight is detected automatically.

Can I add up a whole week?

Yes. Tap "+ Add another shift" for each day; the total and average appear at the top.

What is 7 hours 45 minutes in decimal?

7.75 hours.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 20 minutes is 0.33, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75, so 8 hours 20 minutes is 8.33 hours. The calculator shows the decimal total under the hours and minutes.

Should I subtract my lunch break?

Subtract breaks that are unpaid, and enter 0 if your break is paid. In India, the Factories Act says workers should not work more than five hours at a stretch without a rest interval of at least half an hour.

How is overtime pay calculated here?

Set the hourly rate and the overtime limit per shift. Hours beyond the limit are paid at 1.5 times the rate. A 10-hour shift with overtime after 8 hours at ₹200 an hour pays 8 × ₹200 + 2 × ₹300 = ₹2,200.

Is overtime paid at 1.5 times or 2 times in India?

Under the Factories Act, factory workers get twice the ordinary wage for work beyond 9 hours a day or 48 hours a week. This calculator uses a fixed 1.5 times rate, so check your employer's rules and the law that applies to you.

How many hours is a 12-hour night shift with a 1-hour break?

A shift from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM with a 60-minute break is 11 hours of work. The calculator handles the end time being after midnight automatically and marks the shift as overnight.

What happens if the start and end times are the same?

The shift counts as 0 hours, not 24. The calculator treats an end time earlier than the start as an overnight shift, but identical times give no worked time, so split a full 24-hour duty into two shifts.

How do I enter times in AM and PM?

The time boxes follow your phone or computer's clock format. If you see a 24-hour clock, 5:30 PM is 17:30 and 10:00 PM is 22:00. Midnight is 00:00 and noon is 12:00.

What does Copy timesheet include?

It copies each shift with its start time, end time, break and length, followed by the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. You can paste it into an email, WhatsApp message or spreadsheet.
