Binary Translator

Convert text to binary, hex, decimal or octal bytes (UTF-8) and back again, type in either box.

About the Binary Translator

The Binary Translator shows the bytes behind any text, in binary, hexadecimal, decimal or octal, and turns those codes back into readable text. Type in either box and the other one follows. It uses UTF-8, so accented letters, Indian scripts and emoji all convert correctly.

What you can do with the Binary Translator

How the conversion works

Each character is stored as one or more bytes in UTF-8. The capital letter H is byte 72, written 01001000 in binary or 48 in hex; the lowercase i is 105, or 01101001. "Hi" therefore translates to 01001000 01101001.

Reading binary by hand

Each of the eight positions has a value: 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1, from left to right. Add up the values wherever there's a 1. In 01001000 the 1s sit in the 64 and 8 positions, and 64 + 8 = 72, which is H.

Characters beyond basic English

Plain English letters, digits and punctuation take one byte each. Accented letters take two, most Indian-script letters three, and emoji four. That's why "Hi 👋" shows seven bytes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is each binary group exactly 8 digits?

Eight binary digits make one byte. Shorter values are padded with leading zeros.

Can I decode binary that has no spaces?

Yes. A long run of 0s and 1s is split into 8-digit groups automatically (2 digits for hex, 3 for octal).

How is this different from the Number Base Converter?

The Binary Translator converts text characters; the Number Base Converter converts a single number between binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal.

What is the letter A in binary?

Capital A is 65 in ASCII, which is 01000001 in binary. Lowercase a is 97, or 01100001. The two differ by 32, which is exactly one bit, so changing that single bit switches a letter between upper and lowercase.

What is a space in binary?

A space is character 32, written as 00100000 in binary, 20 in hex, 32 in decimal and 040 in octal. Spaces between words in your text become bytes like this, which is separate from the optional gap the tool puts between bytes.

How do I convert hex like 48 65 6C 6C 6F back to text?

Choose Hex at the top and paste the codes into the code box. The text box shows Hello. Groups can be separated by spaces or commas, and a 0x prefix on each group, such as 0x48, is accepted.

How many bytes does Hindi text take in binary?

Most Devanagari characters take 3 bytes in UTF-8, so each one becomes three 8-bit groups. The word नमस्ते is 6 Unicode characters, including the vowel signs and the halant, which comes to 18 bytes. English letters take 1 byte each.

How do I convert decimal codes like 72 101 108 108 111 to text?

Choose Decimal and paste the numbers with spaces or commas between them. That example decodes to Hello. Decimal numbers must be separated, because unlike binary or hex they vary in length and cannot be split up automatically.

Why does it say some groups are not valid bytes?

Each group must be a byte from 0 to 255. You will see the warning if a binary group contains digits other than 0 and 1, a hex group has letters beyond F, or a decimal number is above 255. Check that the right format is selected at the top.

Is this ASCII or UTF-8?

It uses UTF-8, which matches ASCII for the first 128 characters, so English letters, digits and common symbols give the same single byte either way. Characters outside ASCII, like é, ₹ or emoji, become 2 to 4 bytes.

What does the letter H look like in octal?

H is 72 in decimal, which is 110 in octal, because 72 equals 1 × 64 + 1 × 8 + 0. Choose Octal and every byte is shown as three digits, so "Hi" becomes 110 151.
