Sales Tax / GST Calculator
Add GST or sales tax to a price, or work out the tax already included in a price, with the CGST and SGST split for India.
About the Sales Tax / GST Calculator
The GST Calculator adds GST to a price or removes it from a GST-inclusive price, and shows the CGST + SGST split for sales within a state or the IGST for sales between states. Tap a rate, 5%, 18% or 40%, or choose Other for any custom rate.
What you can do with the Sales Tax / GST Calculator
- Add or remove GST: Get the GST-inclusive or the original price.
- CGST + SGST or IGST: Shows the split for sales within a state or between states.
- Rate buttons: Tap 5%, 18% or 40%, or set any custom rate.
- Copy the breakdown: Ready for an invoice or a quote.
Removing tax from an inclusive price
If a price of ₹1,180 already includes 18% GST, the price before tax is 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, and the tax is ₹180. Simply subtracting 18% (which gives 967.60) is a common mistake, because the 18% was charged on the lower pre-tax amount. Choose "Remove GST" to do it the right way.
CGST, SGST and IGST
For a sale within one Indian state, GST is split equally into Central GST and State GST, so 18% GST is 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. For sales between states, the full rate is charged as Integrated GST (IGST) instead. The "Within state" and "Other state" buttons switch the receipt between the two.
Which rate applies?
GST rates depend on the product or service, and they're revised from time to time; a major simplification in September 2025 moved most items to two main rates of 5% and 18%, with 40% on a small group of goods. Check the current rate for your item. Use Other for special or older rates such as 3%, 12% or 28%, or for sales tax or VAT in another country.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate GST on a price?
Multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100, then add it to the price. 18% GST on ₹2,500 is ₹450, making ₹2,950.
How do I find the price without GST?
Divide the GST-inclusive price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For 18%: price ÷ 1.18. The "Remove GST" mode does this for you.
Is this tool only for India?
No. Pick Other and enter any rate to use it for sales tax or VAT. The CGST/SGST/IGST split only applies to Indian GST.
What are the current GST rates in India?
Since 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall under 5% or 18%, with 40% on a small list of luxury and sin goods, and some items at 0%. Special rates such as 3% on gold still apply. Use the Other button for any rate not on the chips.
Why can't I just subtract 18% to remove GST?
Because the GST was added to the base price, not taken from the total. For 1,180 including 18% GST, the base is 1,180 / 1.18 = 1,000. Subtracting 18% of 1,180 gives 967.60, which is wrong. Choose Remove GST and the tool divides correctly.
When should I charge CGST and SGST instead of IGST?
Charge CGST plus SGST when the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, split equally, such as 9% + 9% for 18%. Charge IGST at the full rate when they are in different states. Pick Within state or Other state to match.
What is UTGST?
In union territories without their own legislature, such as Chandigarh or Ladakh, UTGST replaces SGST. Sales within such a territory are charged CGST plus UTGST, split half and half like CGST plus SGST, so the Within state amounts here apply.
Is GST included in the MRP?
Yes. The MRP printed on packaged goods in India includes all taxes, so GST is already inside it. To see how much of an MRP is GST, choose Remove GST, enter the MRP and pick the rate that applies to that product.
How much GST do restaurants charge?
Most standalone restaurants charge 5% GST, without input tax credit. Restaurants inside hotels with room tariffs above 7,500 rupees a night charge 18%. Check the bill, then use Add GST with the food subtotal to verify the tax amount.
Can I calculate GST for 12% or 28%, which I see on old bills?
Yes. Tap Other and set the custom rate slider to 12, 28 or any value from 0% to 50% in steps of 0.25%. This helps when checking invoices issued before the September 2025 rate changes, or for special rates on specific products.
Who needs to register for GST?
Businesses usually need GST registration once yearly turnover crosses 40 lakh rupees for goods or 20 lakh for services, with lower limits in some special category states. Some sellers, such as those supplying goods to other states, must register regardless of turnover. A CA can confirm what applies to you.
