Running Pace Calculator

Enter a distance and your time to get your pace per kilometre and per mile, and your speed.

About the Running Pace Calculator

The Running Pace Calculator turns a distance and time into your pace per kilometre and per mile and your speed. Tap 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon, enter hours, minutes and seconds, and see predicted times for other race distances and a split table for every kilometre or mile.

What you can do with the Running Pace Calculator

Pace vs speed

Runners usually think in pace (minutes per km) rather than speed (km/h), because it maps directly to the clock: a 6:00 pace means every kilometre marker ticks by at six-minute intervals. Speed is the same information flipped, useful on a treadmill, which is set in km/h.

Predicting race times

Riegel's formula estimates how your time scales with distance: you slow down a little as races get longer. It works best when you've trained for the longer distance, so treat marathon predictions from a 5K as a hopeful best case.

Even pacing beats a fast start

Most personal bests come from running close to even pace, or slightly faster in the second half. Use the split table to plan the time you should see at each kilometre marker.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out the pace for a target time?

Enter the race distance and your goal time, the pace shown is what you need to hold.

Can I use miles?

Yes. Choose Miles; the pace is then shown per mile with the per-km pace underneath.

How accurate are the race predictions?

They're a guide based on Riegel's formula, which assumes similar training and conditions. Real results vary with hills, heat and fitness.

How do I convert pace into speed?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per kilometre to get km/h. A 6:00 per km pace is 10 km/h, and 5:00 per km is 12 km/h. The calculator shows both km/h and mph under your pace.

What pace do I need for a sub-2 hour half marathon?

About 5:41 per kilometre, held for the full 21.1 km. That happens to be the same pace as a 4-hour marathon. Tap Half marathon, enter 2:00:00 and the calculator shows the exact pace and splits.

What pace is a 1-hour 10K or a 25-minute 5K?

A 60-minute 10K needs 6:00 per km, and a 25-minute 5K needs 5:00 per km. Tap the race button, enter the target time and open Split times to see where you should be at each kilometre.

What is a 10-minute mile in kilometre pace?

A 10:00 per mile pace is about 6:13 per kilometre. Choose Miles, enter 1 as the distance and 10 minutes as the time, and the calculator shows the matching pace per km along with the speed.

What does the Split times table show?

It shows the total elapsed time at each kilometre or mile if you run at a perfectly even pace, ending with your finish time. It is useful as a pacing plan for a race or a time to check at each marker.

Should I run even splits or a negative split?

Many runners aim for even splits or a slightly faster second half, called a negative split, because starting too fast often leads to slowing down later. The split table here assumes an even pace from start to finish.

How do I use this with a treadmill?

Enter the distance and time shown on the treadmill console to get your pace. To go the other way, a treadmill set to 10 km/h is a 6:00 per km pace, and 12 km/h is 5:00 per km.

Why does my GPS watch show a different pace?

GPS watches can drift, especially near tall buildings or trees, and auto-pause can change the time recorded. Race courses are measured on the shortest line, so watches often show slightly more distance. The calculator uses exactly the distance and time you enter.
