Data Speed Converter

Convert bps, kbps, Mbps and Gbps.

About the Data Speed Converter

The Data Speed Converter translates between bits per second (bps, kbps, Mbps, Gbps) and bytes per second (KB/s, MB/s), the gap between your internet plan's number and the speed shown when downloading.

What you can do with the Data Speed Converter

Megabits vs megabytes

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). Download managers and browsers usually show megabytes per second (MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so divide by 8: a 100 Mbps connection can download at up to about 12.5 MB/s.

Why real downloads are a bit slower

Some of the connection's capacity is used by network protocols, Wi-Fi conditions and other devices, so real download speeds usually land somewhat below the theoretical maximum, often 80–95% of it on a good wired connection.

Decimal units for speed

Network speeds use decimal prefixes: 1 Mbps is exactly 1,000,000 bits per second, and this converter follows that standard. File sizes, in contrast, are often shown with 1,024-based units, see the Data Storage Converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a 1 GB file take on a 50 Mbps connection?

1 GB is about 8,000 megabits, so at 50 Mbps it takes about 160 seconds, just under three minutes, in ideal conditions.

Is 100 Mbps the same as 100 MB/s?

No. 100 Mbps is about 12.5 MB/s, eight times slower than 100 MB/s.

What does the small "b" vs capital "B" mean?

Lowercase b is bits and uppercase B is bytes. Mb is megabits; MB is megabytes.

What is 1 Gbps in MB/s?

One gigabit per second is 125 megabytes per second, because there are 8 bits in a byte. Fibre plans of 1 Gbps can download up to about 125 MB/s, though Wi-Fi, the device and the server often keep real speeds lower.

How fast is 64 kbps after my daily data limit?

Many Indian mobile plans slow to 64 kbps once the daily quota is used. That is 8 KB/s, enough for text messages but slow for photos and video. Type 64 with kbps selected to see it in other units.

Why does my download manager show less than 12.5 MB/s on a 100 Mbps plan?

This tool counts 1 MB/s as 1,000,000 bytes per second. Some apps count 1 MB as 1,048,576 bytes, so 100 Mbps shows as about 11.92 MB/s there. Network overhead, Wi-Fi and server limits also reduce speed.

How many kbps are in 1 Mbps?

One Mbps is 1,000 kbps, and one Gbps is 1,000 Mbps. Network speeds use steps of 1,000, not 1,024. In bytes, 1 Mbps is 125 KB/s. Pick Mbps and kbps, or read every unit from the list.

Why is my speed test result lower than my plan speed?

Plans state the maximum speed in Mbps. Tests often show less because of Wi-Fi range, older devices, busy hours, other devices sharing the line and the test server. Try a wired connection, then compare the result in Mbps with this converter.

Is upload speed converted the same way as download speed?

Yes. Upload and download speeds use the same units, so 20 Mbps upload is 2.5 MB/s. Many broadband and mobile plans have lower upload than download speeds, which matters for video calls and sending large files.

How long does a 5 GB download take at 100 Mbps?

At a full 100 Mbps, which is 12.5 MB/s, 5 GB takes about 400 seconds, or just under 7 minutes, using 1 GB as 1,000 MB. Real downloads often take longer because speeds dip below the plan figure.

Is ping the same as speed?

No. Ping, or latency, is the delay in milliseconds for data to travel to a server and back, while speed is how much data moves per second. A fast connection can still have high ping. This tool converts speeds, not latency.
