Weight Converter

Convert between kilograms, pounds, ounces and more.

About the Weight Converter

The Weight Converter handles metric units (milligrams, grams, kilograms and tonnes), imperial units (ounces, pounds and stone) and the three different "tons" people often confuse.

What you can do with the Weight Converter

Three kinds of ton

"Ton" means different things in different places. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. A US short ton is 2,000 lb (about 907 kg), and a UK long ton is 2,240 lb (about 1,016 kg). All three are listed separately here so you can pick the one your document actually means.

Pounds, ounces and stone

A pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, and an ounce is one-sixteenth of a pound, about 28.35 grams. A stone is 14 pounds (about 6.35 kg) and is still commonly used for body weight in the UK and Ireland, so "11 stone" means 154 lb or roughly 69.9 kg.

Mass or weight?

Strictly speaking, kilograms and pounds measure mass, how much matter something contains, while weight is the force of gravity acting on it. In everyday life the two words are used interchangeably, and on Earth the numbers match, so this tool follows everyday use.

Is weight in kg the same as mass?

In everyday use, yes. Kilograms and pounds measure mass, and scales show mass by assuming normal Earth gravity. In physics, weight is a force measured in newtons, so 1 kg of mass weighs about 9.81 N on Earth. This tool converts mass units.

Why does the converter show so many decimal places?

Pounds and ounces have exact definitions in kilograms with many digits, such as 0.45359237 kg per pound, so results are rarely round. The list shows up to six decimal places. Round the answer yourself to suit your use, for example to the nearest gram.
