Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
It's a scrambled passage from Cicero's philosophical work "De finibus bonorum et malorum", written in 45 BC. It became standard dummy text in the 1960s on Letraset transfer sheets and later spread through desktop publishing software.
Why designers use it
Readable placeholder text draws attention to what it says. Lorem Ipsum looks like real text, with words of varied length and normal punctuation, but has no meaning, so people judge the layout, fonts and spacing instead.
Remember to replace it

Why do designers use Lorem Ipsum instead of real text?
It looks like ordinary text, with a mix of short and long words, but nobody stops to read it. That keeps attention on layout, fonts and spacing while the real copy is still being written, and it is clearly temporary.
How many words are in one paragraph?
Each sentence has 6 to 14 words. Short paragraphs have 2 to 3 sentences, medium 4 to 6 and long 7 to 10. A medium paragraph therefore comes to roughly 50 words on average, and a long one about 85.
How do I get about 500 words of dummy text?
Words mode goes up to 100 words, so use paragraphs instead. Ten medium paragraphs give roughly 500 words, or six long ones. Each "How many" setting goes from 1 to 100, so you can make several thousand words if needed.
Can I turn off the "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" opening?
Yes. Switch off "Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" and every paragraph, sentence or list item is random from the start. Leave it on if you want the familiar opening that people recognise as placeholder text.
Is it a problem if I forget Lorem Ipsum on my live website?
Yes. It looks unfinished to visitors, and search engines and ad networks may see the pages as low-value content. Many bloggers find leftover placeholder pages hurt AdSense approval, so search your site for "lorem" before publishing.
How long are the list items?
In List items mode, Short gives 2 to 4 words per item, Medium 4 to 7 and Long 7 to 12. Each item starts with a capital letter and has no full stop, which suits menus, feature lists and bullet points in mock-ups.
Can I download the placeholder text?
Yes. The result box can be copied in one tap or downloaded as a text file. With "Wrap in HTML tags" on, the download contains the <p> or <ul><li> markup too, ready to drop into a page template.
